This painting was inspired while visiting my friend and fellow artist John Dynon in Silverton nestled in far west NSW.

I wanted to convey the undulating texture of the soil that seemed to have been etched by generations of wind and rain and left largely untouched in this isolated part of the country.

The soil has natural shades of red from the iron oxide content and also hints of blue green from glauconite.  These shades have been emphasised in the picture to bring through the character of the land.

Silverton was one of Australias earliest mining settlements in the 1880s,  eventually overshadowed by the nearby mines of Broken Hill.  However it has become quietly famous as the backdrop for many film and television scenes.  Mission Impossible II, Mad Max II and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert are some of the films that have used the rugged Silverton landscape as a setting.
