This painting was inspired by a wonderful local anecdote from Warwick, one of my favourite towns in Queensland.
Warwick is famous for it's typical Australian irreverence from an incident when a local hurled a well aimed egg at the then Prime Minister "Billy Hughes" who was visiting the town to promote the case for conscription. Hughes then demanded that the egg thrower be arrested. The local policeman politely declined to comply stating that no "Queensland" law had been broken so he could not arrest the offender.
"Late Afternoon Near Warwick" is a painting is of a homestead claimed to be situated on the property owned by the egg thrower. I have no reason to disbelieve the provenance of the site, and spent some memorable evenings enjoying the country hospitality of the current owners of the land.
I was particularly taken by the dramatic effect of the afternnon shadows falling across the hillside.
